The TON Testnet Will Be Terminated by August 2020

News / 07.07.2020

Despite the termination of Telegram’s blockchain project, users will need to install their own testnet validators for continuous usage of the network.

Since the termination of the Telegram Open Network (TON) two months ago, the TON test net has apparently continued to run. In an update provided by the official TON development group on July 6, TON’s support by the test network will be discontinued.

They will turn off the remaining TON validators by August 1. Based on the recommendation of the TON official in the update, network participants need to save all their relevant data and stop their testing processes.

In spite of the scheduled shut down of the testnet less than a month from now, network participants will still have the opportunity to continue experimenting after termination.

However, the network participants need to install their own testnet validators. The TON official provided a guide on how to go about it in three different documents for the Full Node, the Validator, and Test Grams.

Telegram released its Telegram Open Network (TON) testnet explorer and node software on its website in September last year, two months prior to its planned release of the Gram digital currency. At the time, the firm was planning to release an alpha version of an iOS wallet to work with its native token, the Gram.

Unfortunately, the firm’s plan regarding TON was not really successful, as the U.S. SEC declared its $1.7 billion ICO in October last year illegal. The SEC filed an emergency action and restraining order against the firm and the Telegram Open Network (TON) in a complaint filed with federal district court in Manhattan.

As the legal battle continued with the SEC, the firm agreed to shut down its TON project and likewise return $1.2 billion to investors, as stipulated in the final settlement approved by a court.
